today i finished up the binding the on the HST baby quilt. this quilt is going to a friend who is due in just a few weeks with a baby boy. her two year year old daughter is one of my day care kids. my girls are very excited about this baby, so the girls and the big sis-to-be all helped me every step of the way with the quilt. they choose ALL the fabrics (eek, that was scary). when they chose the giraffe fabric, i pulled out all of my blues and greens, and let them choose which ones that we should use.
for the middle square, i flipped through a free motion quilting book that i borrowed from my quilt guild’s library. i found this simple design (i think it’s described as tulips on the diagonal, and triangles on the horizontal). it’s certainly not perfect… my machine quilting skills are still very much a work in progress. for the rest of the quilt, i quilted straight diagonal lines, 1/4″ on both sides of the middle of the HSTs. i like the little criss cross pattern they make on the points.
you can just see a peek of the car/roads fabric that the girls chose for the back. it had lots of blue and greens with just a bit of orange, so it was actually a very lucky pick (considering a 2 year old and 3.5 year old picked it out!).
i love the look of a new quilt flapping in the breeze. i’ll miss this in the winter!
